Timing Beats Talent: Why Positioning Matters More Than You Think

Two engineers. Same zip code. One is smarter. The other is richer.

One joined NVIDIA 10 years ago. The other joined a startup nobody had heard of. Both live in the same Bay Area neighborhood. Same schools. Same opportunities on paper. Both work hard. Both are talented.

The Kicker

The startup engineer is probably smarter. Better problem solver. More technical. The kind of person who can architect systems most people in the room barely understand.

But the NVIDIA engineer now has generational wealth from stock grants. And the startup engineer is still debugging production issues at 1:07 AM while explaining to relatives: "We're still early… but the technology is incredible."

Neither one slacked off. Neither one "got lucky" in the lazy sense of the word. One just happened to join a company before the world decided AI was the future. The other joined a company before the world cared. That difference matters.

What I See in Real Estate

I see this in real estate constantly. Two equally capable investors. Same market. Same year. Same work ethic. One understands the cycle early and positions accordingly. The other is still waiting for certainty.

One understands what is happening. The other is still analyzing what happened. And by the time consensus arrives — the opportunity is usually gone.

That's why timing matters. Not because timing beats skill. But because recognizing shifts before everyone else is a skill. And honestly, that may be one of the most valuable skills in any market.

You can be the smartest person in the room and still miss the wave. But if you learn to read the waves? You survive anywhere.
