When you want something badly enough, the universe listens.
My son taught me that lesson when he was 10 years old.
Six Months of Asking
For six months, he asked me for a cockatiel every single day. Sometimes he cried. Sometimes he negotiated. Sometimes he just quietly kept asking.
But he never let the idea go.
I kept saying no. "Not happening."
On Black Friday, I told him to go shopping with his sister instead. Get something else. Move on.
But he didn't move on.
The Morning Everything Changed
The next morning, he was outside doing backyard chores. Still thinking about that bird. Still wanting it. Still refusing to let go of the idea.
Then something unbelievable happened.
He spotted a cockatiel sitting on a tree in our backyard.
Of all the birds in the world, one somehow appeared there at that exact moment.
He tried to catch it. The bird flew. He followed. No hesitation. No doubt. No overthinking. Just movement toward what he wanted.
Then the bird landed on his hand.
He walked into the house crying tears of joy.
Six months of desire. Six months of belief. Six months of refusing to accept anything less.
We searched for the owner. Nobody came looking for it.
That was 12 years ago. That bird is still with us today. His name is Deedoo.
The Lesson
Here's what I learned watching my son that day:
The people who get what they want are rarely the ones waiting for permission. They're the ones who stay deeply focused on what they want long after everyone else tells them to move on.
Desire is not passive. It's intention. It's emotional commitment. It's consistency. It's refusing substitutes.
And sometimes, when you're that clear about what you want… things align. Doors open. Birds land on your hand.
My son learned that lesson at 10. I'm still learning it.
